Maintaining motivation to exercise can feel like an uphill battle, especially when life gets busy. But there are some strategies you can use to make exercise a consistent and rewarding part of your life.

Here are some tips to keep you inspired and committed to your fitness journey.

1. Find Your Reason Why

Lasting motivation starts with understanding why you want to exercise.

Is it to improve your health, feel stronger, or simply to have fun? Maybe you’re exercising to be a role model for your kids, or to prepare for a specific event like a marathon. Maybe you just want to feel more confident at the beach.

Whatever your reason, make it clear, and keep it in mind.

2. Find an Exercise You Enjoy

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore.

The key is to find activities that you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to try a bunch of different things until you find what clicks for you. This could be group fitness, strength training, or something like hiking.

When you look forward to your workouts, they become much easier to adhere to.

3. Don’t Get Married to One Mode of Exercise

Building on the above point, you should never feel like you must stick to one type of exercise.

Over time you will change, and so will your interests. Be open to trying different types of exercise. Mixing things up not only keeps you mentally engaged but also helps prevent overuse injuries and plateaus in your fitness progress.

For example, you might have a period where building strength through heavy weight training is the goal. Then you might want to train for a marathon. Then you might want to do some sprint training.

There is nothing wrong with changing the focus for a few months at a time. In fact, it can be the perfect way to kick start your love for training and keep you motivated long-term.

4. Find Your Community

Exercising with others is a game changer.

Joining a gym class, running club, or online fitness group creates a sense of accountability and camaraderie. When you are part of a community, you’re more likely to show up and have more fun while you train.

Building connections with like-minded can also make it easier to adhere to a healthy lifestyle because they feel a similar way. As such, they are more likely to be supportive than the opposite.

5. Focus on the Process, Not the Outcomes

When you first start exercising you will make rapid progress. But this will slow down, and it can become easy to get discouraged when results take longer than expected.

Instead of fixating on the end goal – like losing 5 kilograms or lifting a certain amount of weight – try and make the process the priority.

Focus on adhering to all your sessions, eating a diet that supports your training, and simply putting a high degree of effort into every single exercise.

If you focus on the process, the bigger goals will fall.

6. Don’t be afraid to pull back

There will be times when life is busy and stress is high.

During these times it can become challenging to meet your normal training routine. Moreover, pushing through when you everything else is a bit too much can increase your risk of burnout and injury.

Instead of forcing yourself to train normally, pulling back is going to be a better option.

This might look like doing two-to-three sessions per week instead of your normal five, or turning your hour long sessions into quick 30 minute workouts.

The good news is you can maintain strength and fitness on a fraction of your normal training volume, so you can be confident you won’t lose your gains. More importantly, when thing shave slowed down and you are ready to get back into “normal” training, you will feel refreshed and motivated to do so.
